Israeli National Security Minister Itamar Ben-Gvir was lightly wounded on Friday after being involved in a car accident. A police source said the minister's driver ran a red light and that he will be investigated.

Ben-Gvir was returning from a visit to a scene of a suspected terror stabbing in the central Israeli city of Ramle when a car crashed into his at a junction, resulting in the minister's car flipping over.

"We warned time and time again that the Ben-Gvir convoy's reckless driving would end in disaster – the writing was on the wall," a security official said. "Someone could have easily been killed today. He violates the law, all security personnel warned about this conduct."

Ben-Gvir was taken to hospital in central Israel along with his daughter, one of his security guards, and the driver of the other vehicle involved in the accident. They are all in light condition.

Ben-Gvir is set to be transferred to Hadassah Ein Kerem Hospital in Jerusalem to receive further treatment for his broken ribs.

Relatives of the driver in the second vehicle involved in the accident said that "there is no way that he ran a red light. He's not that kind of person." According to them, "Ben-Gvir returned from the scene [of the stabbing attack], minister's cars don't stop at traffic lights."

Haaretz reported in September that the Shin Bet security service has contacted the Prime Minister's Office and the National Security Ministry in the wake of a number of incidents in which Ben-Gvir's car broke traffic laws.

According to security sources who spoke to Haaretz on condition of anonymity, the national security minister's bodyguards complained to their superiors in the ministry that Ben-Gvir was ordering his drivers to commit traffic offenses that endanger them and himself, including going through red lights, speeding and driving on the shoulder of the road.

In August, Ben-Gvir's vehicle collided with a family car carrying three children after his driver ran a red light at the French Hill junction in Jerusalem. Two occupants of the vehicle which was struck felt unwell, but declined medical treatment. The family members, as well as the minister and his security team who were traveling in another vehicle behind him, were unharmed.

Ben-Gvir has 79 traffic offense convictions. His driving license had been revoked several times. In 2024, he filmed himself twice in a moving vehicle without a seat belt. Despite the footage, police has not fined the minister.
