'This Isn't Time for Celebrations': Tel Aviv Mayor Calls Off Annual Pride Parade Amid Gaza War

May 08th, 19PM May 08th, 19PMTel Aviv Mayor Ron Huldai announced on Wednesday that the city's Pride Parade would be cancelled this year, saying that an alternate event will be held instead.
"This is not the time for celebrations," Huldai wrote in a post on X. "132 of our sons are daughters are still hostages in Gaza, the circle of grief is expanding every day, and we are in one of the most difficult periods for the State of Israel."
The parade was slated to take place on June 7, and in its place, a central event titled "Pride, Hope, and Freedom" will be held, alongside other local gatherings.
Open House Jerusalem, a gay and lesbian organization, simultaneously announced that Jerusalem's Pride Parade will take place on May 30 and will take its usual route, but in "a special format, and as part of the fight to return the hostages."
"The pride and tolerance parade in Jerusalem is a protest event and has a different character than Tel Aviv's parade, this is also the reason that the event will take place this year," the Open House said.
Tel Aviv is known for its annual Pride Month events, with tens of thousands of people usually in attendance at the parade. The event also draws a large number of international tourists.
In 2023, the parade was held amidst the mass protests against the judicial overhaul, which threatened to harm their rights and weaken Israel's Supreme Court. The groups leading the protests joined with the LGBTQ+ community organizations leading the Pride Parade under a unified message: "There is no pride without democracy."
